Common Questions
Do you handle the permit?
Yes. Every package includes the South Walton Fire District bonfire permit. We buy it about 14 days before your night, as soon as the county opens sales for that date. The permit fee is non-refundable once it is issued.
Where do you set up?
At 11 permitted public beach accesses from Miramar Beach to Inlet Beach. See every spot on our beach map. If your first choice sells out, we reach out with the closest open access.
Can we have a bonfire in Destin?
Destin is in Okaloosa County, which does not allow beach bonfires. Miramar Beach is about 15 minutes east, and it is our closest fire to Destin.
What time do bonfires start?
From March 1 through October 31, as early as 5:45 PM, with the beach clear by midnight. From November 1 through February, as early as 4:45 PM, with the beach clear by 11 PM. Most guests start 30 minutes before sunset.
What if it rains?
Rain alone does not cancel a bonfire. If the weather looks unsure, we can often move your start time if you ask before noon that day. If the county cancels fires, we work with you on a new date.
What should we bring?
Your people, snacks and drinks in cans or plastic. Glass is not allowed on Walton County beaches and can bring a $250 fine per item. Balloons are not allowed either.
Can we bring our dog?
Dogs are not allowed on South Walton beaches without a county dog permit, so please leave them at the rental for the night.
How far ahead should we book?
In March through October, weekends fill two to four weeks out. Fall and winter nights often have same week openings. Permits are limited per access each night, so earlier is better.
What about groups of 30 or more?
Groups of 30 or more, kids included, need a Walton County special event permit on top of the bonfire permit. We file it for you about 30 days ahead. Text or call us to plan it.
Cancellation and Rescheduling
Permits
- Walton County requires a permit for every beach bonfire, bought in advance.
- If your permit has not been bought yet, you get a full refund when you cancel.
- Bonfire permits are bought about 14 days before your event. Special event permits are bought about 30 days ahead.
- Once a permit is issued, the county does not refund it.
Cancelling After the Permit Is Bought
- More than 48 hours before your start time: a full refund, minus permit fees.
- Less than 48 hours before your start time: a booking credit for the total paid, minus permit fees. A new permit applies when you reschedule.
- Within 6 hours of your event: no refund or credit.
Special Events of 30 or More Guests
- Cancel 60 days or more ahead for a full refund.
- Within 60 days, a partial refund may apply. The 50% deposit and any permit fees are non-refundable.
Weather
- Rain alone does not cancel a bonfire. If you cancel for weather and the county has not cancelled fires, the standard policy applies.
- If the forecast looks unsure, we can often adjust your start time. Ask before noon on the day of your event.
- If you move to another date, a new permit is needed, and we will help you find a night that works.
Turtle Nesting
- Protected nests or changing beach conditions can mean a small move. If that happens, we set you up at a nearby access and tell you ahead of time.
Beach Safety
- Glass is not allowed. It can bring a $250 fee per item and may shut down the bonfire.
- Balloons are not allowed because of their harm to wildlife.
- Dogs need a county permit, so please leave them at home for the night.
